Sports Weekly Bulletin – 27 August

Kia ora Chilton whānau

As we head into our 2nd  week of lockdown a sense of déjà vu descends upon us. What’s different this time is we are prepared in this ever changing and fluid environment.
The big news in the sports world this week was the cancellation of Winter Tournament Week and AIMS Games. It is a cruel blow to those affected students with the cancellation also last year of these big tournaments. Winter Tournament week is the pinnacle of every school’s top team competition.

Sport provides us with many lessons, to learn how nothing comes without hard work, to lead and be a part of a team, to be resilient, to win with humility and move on from losses. It is vitally important that we look out for each other at this time, acknowledge our shared loss, and reset our goals.

On the upside, Chilton is very fortunate to have had some amazing people working with our girls and I would like to take this time to acknowledge the hard work and dedication to all those who are making a difference in the lives of our rangatahi and tamariki.

Here is what we do know:

  • Winter sport won’t go beyond term 3. For any sports still to finish, (hockey and year 7 & 8 basketball) they will be wound up by the end of term 3.
  • Our students will be given sufficient time to “prepare to play” for the above sports to resume (if they can) and for summer sports to begin in term 4. This may mean pushing back the start of sports in term 4 and playing a shorter season.
  • Any current upcoming events (beyond the lockdown period) remain on the calendar, but may need to be postponed, taking into account the other principles.

Thank you all for your patience and support as we work through this. Hopefully at the end of the week we can gain some longer term certainty around the Alert Level time frames which will aid our planning/communication to you.

Who’s keeping active during lockdown?

And yes Sophie Bull, you have invented a new game!

Term 4 sport registrations are now open via Chilton Central

In the meantime, please complete your term 4 sport registrations. It is extremely helpful in our planning if we have an exact number of girls in sport in term 4, otherwise teams may miss out due to not getting your registration in on time.

Chilton Sports Awards nominations are now open via Chilton Central

Reminder our cut off date is Friday 1 October, so please get those nominations in as we don’t want anyone to miss out.

Netball

So glad all our CSW Netball girls (except the Senior A team) were able to play in their final game. Congratulations to the Junior A team – runners up in Collegiate 2. Huge thanks to coach Cate Sexton and manager Liz Boon.

Girls, it has been a pleasure to watch you play this season. Can’t wait to see what you can do next year!

Elle Kane – Chilton Sports Captain

I caught up with our Sports Captain to see what she has been up to during lockdown.

Well, here we are again in an ever changing environment. You are right in the thick of training for New Zealand Aerobic Champs. How have you had to adapt your trainings over the last week and going forward?

Yes, here we go again! To be honest, I think I’m the fittest and strongest I’ve ever been, so now the challenge is to not lose too much of my hard work during lockdown for Nationals! Over the past week, I’ve had to ditch my gym and mirrors for the lounge upstairs. Don’t tell our Chilton Golfers but I’ve also been practicing my routine choreography on the greens, just quietly for my aerobics friends; this makes the perfect square.

Elle, you compete in the FISAF Senior Women Category – what does this mean?

This means I compete in the international section of our sport, competing with women who have been doing aerobics longer than I have been alive! Yikes – I must admit it’s a bit scary standing backstage with athletes who have world titles to their name and plenty of experience! FISAF stands for the Federation of International Sport Aerobics and Fitness, so our routines are harder than NZCAF routines and more is expected of us. Our choreography and music is faster, routines are longer and our skills are mapped out on FRFs which sit in front of the judges when we compete so they know what is coming next.

It’s a whole lot of fun, a tight knit community who support and build each other up. What makes our grueling 2 minute routine worth it, is that we also get the opportunity to qualify for Team NZ to travel internationally.

I wouldn’t be able to do it without my coaches, and my duo partner and best friend, Lizzie! You might have noticed around school that we’re abit of a package deal!

So, your training must be pretty intense?! Can you give us a run down on how you train for aerobics?

I train 7 days a week, either focusing on my individual routine, or with my Duo partner Lizzie. A week for me will include a weight session, skill and choreography cleaning, pilates, plenty of cardio and lots of visualisation! My training programme that has been written for me has no one day that is the same! In the lead up to competitions a major focus is routines, so I have been doing back to back routines with a minute rest inbetween! Luckily I love my coach and sport, because if you do aerobics you will know how hard this is!

Aerobics is not always upbeat, recently I have been able to talk with a World Champion about Sports Psychology and partake in a FISAF webinar about what the judges look for – All via Zoom!

Aerobics is a growing sport at Chilton, it’s so fun to see the energy and enthusiasm that everyone brings to training. You all remind me why I love my sport! Aerobics brings so many good memories and fun times I wouldn’t trade for the world! I challenge you to come and join Aerobics next year!

Now is the time for you Aerobics girls to be practicing, so you don’t forget your routines for our super coach, Arlene! Set yourself some challenges, practice your skills or even catch up on Zoom with your friends to practice an Arm Routine!

Netball

Congratulations to the Junior B netball team. They won their Collegiate grade last Saturday.
This team has gone from strength to strength over the season. This team is coached by students Elizabeth Hewitt and Elle Kane.

All the very best to the Senior A Netball team. Their Final is scheduled for Monday 23 August.
Due to the Alert Level 4  this will quite likely get pushed back. Good luck for whenever this game can happen.

Golf

Congratulations to Erika Cui.  Erika successfully defended the Club Champ Title for 6/4 over 36 holes on Sunday August 1st on Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club.
