Our Preschool

Designed for learning, the Chilton Preschool programme invites children to explore, discover, and delight in the world around them.

Our experienced and highly dedicated teaching team deliver a balanced curriculum, combining a proven mix of free play and structured learning that includes a strong focus on early literacy and numeracy.

We offer full day and extended day options for 2 – 5 year old girls and boys.  Chilton preschool is also eligible for the 20 hours ECE subsidy.

Our preschool is unique in the Hutt Valley:

Pastoral Care is at the heart of everything we do. Children and their families experience a home away from home at Chilton Preschool and know that they are safe here. Each child is known by name and is celebrated for who they are. They belong.

Our excellent teacher to child ratios and small, well considered group sizes mean that the best education is delivered to our Preschool students.

Children’s learning is enriched by our specialist classes, led by experienced teachers in Dance, Physical Education and Music.

Developing and maintaining successful inter-personal relationships and social skills are vital to children’s success in later life.  We provide an early learning setting that carefully nurtures children as they grow and learn alongside others.

Chilton Preschool students graduate from Preschool fully prepared for their entry into Primary School.

A Day in the Life of a Primary Girl

Our girls are engaged in thoughtful, creative learning with a curriculum which is designed to stimulate and challenge.

No two days in Primary School are the same. However, there are daily lessons in Numeracy, Literacy and Inquiry with specialist teaching in Dance, Music, Languages, Physical Education, Religious Education and Art.

We ensure each student is nurtured to their fullest potential in an environment of fun, exploration, encouragement and attentiveness.

A positive approach to teaching and learning ensures our girls are happy and thriving. Celebrating success, growth, achievement and even mistakes encourages their personal growth.

Strong teacher student relationships are fostered throughout each child’s journey at Chilton Primary.

To nurture their wellbeing and to develop a better understanding of themselves, our Year 5 and 6 students have access to Komodo; an online wellbeing platform.

Chilton has a zero bullying policy and students are taught to treat each other with kindness and inclusivity.

At Chilton Primary, we pride ourselves on our holistic approach to education. Your child will flourish at our school academically, socially, as a performing artist, a sportsperson, and as a global citizen.

Inquiry learning begins with exploring a big idea and ends with enduring understandings. Our girls build their knowledge and understanding before wondering and questioning. What ideas do we have? What issues can we explore? What problems do we need to solve?

Our small class sizes ensure our girls receive quality small group and one-on-one teaching on a daily basis. This is one of the key advantages of a Chilton education.

Alongside their learning in English, Mathematics and Inquiry, our girls receive specialist tuition in Dance, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education Te Reo, and Spanish.

The move from Primary to Middle School is the seamless next step in your child’s learning journey. It is our priority that our students are well-adapted and fully prepared for their transition into Middle School.

All students undertake the following as a form of induction:

  • Spend a Day Visits with a designated buddy
  • A year group wide Experience Day
  • Parent information evening
  • Full personal tour
  • Introduction to Middle School Staff
  • Special pastoral care programme

Middle School

Years 7-10

Our Middle School

Class sizes are a maximum of 24 and students study a core curriculum plus a variety of option subjects. The pastoral system is organised in House groups with a Year 7 & 8 group and a Year 9 & 10 group per House. This helps to foster a strong House allegiance. Middle School students gain the skills, knowledge and work ethic to transition into the Senior School with ease.

Our Foundations for Learning:

  • A meaningful and diverse curriculum
  • Supportive and experienced staff and specialist teachers
  • A strong pastoral care programme
  • A wide range of extra-curricular opportunities
  • A collegial, supportive and interactive environment
  • Individual learning support
  • A culture that reinforces core values of respect, kindness, tolerance and inclusiveness.

Our Curriculum

Students in Year 7 and 8 follow a set programme. In Years 9 and 10, students study the core subjects and then, based on their experiences in Year 7 and 8, select options of interest. Year 10 students also have the opportunity to sit two Cambridge IGCSE subjects.

Transition to Senior School

All work covered in Years 7 – 10 provides strong preparation for Cambridge Assessment International Education or NCEA. It is not just about subject knowledge but more about critical thinking, application of skills and growing of academic confidence through work and fun.

Senior School

Years 11-13

Senior School is a great journey where students come into their own. They experience a diverse curriculum, sport, service, leadership, outdoor education and much more.

Open your mind to limitless possibilities with our world-class education in the Hutt Valley. It is amazing what can be achieved when the goal is out in front and you know you can achieve it with work.

A pathway to suit all

In Years 12-13, Chilton now offers a dual pathway model where students, alongside their parents can chose between NCEA and Cambridge International based on which educational offering best suits their learning needs and future aspirations.

What special things does Chilton offer?

The average class size is approximately eight students for subjects other than Mathematics and English. This is highly beneficial to each student, as it ensures they each get one on one tuition with the teacher during each hour-long class.

Each student selects the course they wish to study – if a student wants a creative pathway – they select the Arts. If they want Medicine, they select the Sciences. Timetables are made to suit the needs of the student.

Students, alongside their parents can chose which educational offering best suits their needs whether that be Cambridge or NCEA.

Chilton Ballet Academy

Years 9-12

Our Chilton Ballet Academy balances a Chilton education with full ballet immersion – at school. We are the only school in New Zealand that offers this unique programme, which provides a university entrance qualification at Year 12 whilst preparing our dancers for the rigors of the dance world. Our recent graduates are already training and performing on the world stage. Dance as you learn. Learn as you dance.
