Primary School Weekly Bulletin – 19 November

Year 1

The children reflected on the show through the lens of the Learning Pit.

The Learning Pit helps children to recognise when learning is hard. The Learning Pit picture helps students understand that learning is a challenge and we require a range of tools, strategies and resources to be a successful learner. James Nottingham

In the Learning Pit, we dug deep in learning. We listened to the music because we didn’t know the dance. We kept on trying. My heart was saying it was scary at first but when I did it, I felt really good. Sophie Bleier

When we tried it was a bit scary and the second time it was okay. We dug deep in the show. It was fun. My heart was telling me that I did amazing and I learnt new things. I listened and then did it. It was a bit hard to work our arms at the right time and legs!  Our costumes were hard to put on. We tried to put them on. Then we got it on. I learnt it right. I felt good for myself. Olivia Boyd

When it was the show we did not get it at first. But we got it and we thought hard. My heart was feeling like we can do this. We tried on our costumes. They looked good. It felt good. We worked hard. It was scary and fun and we listened to the beat of the music. The learning pit gave us thinking time. And that’s okay!  And when we got it right I felt happy. Sophie Bryant

In the learning pit we think. Then we got it. We got better and better. My heart was having fun. It felt scary. Felicia Hsiun

In the learning pit we were practising our dance. First time we tried we didn’t get it right. And the next time we got it right. When it was the person with the camera, we put it all together. We needed to learn. The dance was fun. My heart was telling me to keep trying. My favourite part was putting on the costumes. Ruby Ferns

In the show we worked hard. But we couldn’t get it right but then we tried it again and again. Then we got it right and we need to give us some time. It might be scary but when we got there my heart stopped beating and it calmed down. We got it right because we dug deep in our thinking. And I felt good. Christine Li

In the learning pit we had to listen. It was scary. My heart was cold. But then it got hotter and hotter. Then the first time, I got it.  Abby Westbury

Year 3

The Year 3 girls presented their final assembly for 2021 on Monday of this week.  Natalie Westbury and Kylie Yang were excellent hosts.

It was lovely to have Maya Sami share some of her Indian Dancing with us in a very expressive dance. In class we had talked to Maya about the recent celebration of Diwali.  It is delightful to see how proud Maya is of her Fijian Indian culture and how interested and inclusive the girls were.

Some of the girls shared their poetry and chose either an acrostic poem or a senses poem.   They had used some very impressive adjectives to enhance their writing.  Some girls had written Acrostic poems using the name of another member of the class.  They were very respectful in the way they used the girls name and the way they described them.

We had also decided to share some of our weekly news presentations.  Isla Bryant, Sophia Soulsby and Sasha Chaplin shared news about Animals, the Military and Horses.

For our musical items, Sarah-Jane Chaplin and Lily Quan sang beautifully and Elodie Sun and Rebecca Fang shared their piano playing skills.

Whaea Maggie came to share some amazing Speech results.  The girls were delighted to receive their certificates.  They showed great resilience to be taking and preparing for these exams at such a young age and demonstrated integrity by the way they represented our school.  All girls achieved Distinction in their grades and Hannah Chrystall had achieved the highest score for her grade.

Finally, Year 3 were very happy to share a Mindfulness blessing that they had made up actions for.  It is very simple but meaningful:

May you be happy
May you be well
May you be loved
May you be safe
May you be at peace

Year 5

The Year 5 girls have just finished their Persuasive Writing unit into propaganda posters. This was connected to our shared story “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit” by Judith Kerr.

We looked at some of the British World War 2 posters and talked about what the government was trying to get the public to do. We looked at conventions of advertising such as slogans, colour, font and illustrations and talked about how they were effective. Some girls were even able to make connections between the messages sent out to the public during World War 2, and the advertisements the New Zealand government uses to promote COVID-19 public health messages.

The girls then had a go at making their own posters. There are certainly some budding advertisers and graphic designers in the class!
