Spelling Bee

On Wednesday 11th August at 3.45pm we assembled outside the City Gallery, Wellington. Eight of our students successfully made it through to the Lower North Island Spelling Bee Semi-final.
After a 25 word spelling test, two of our students; Jessica Park (year 10) and Mugdha Maddali (year 9) made it through to the next round.
Well done to all those who participated in this event, the atmosphere was tense but exciting!
The next stage was the elimination round and Jessica Park spelt ‘Valedictory’ to be one of four to win a place in the National Finals in November 2021. Congratulations to all our students and especially Jess who was ‘cool, calm and collected’.

Chilton Production 2022

“Do You Want To Build A Snowman?”

Year 10 Drama

Year 10 Drama has been learning all about creating an Overall Production Concept (OPC) for the play: Sleuth by Anthony Shaffer. Drama is all about understanding how to define what is happening within live performance and this unit is mainly concerned with the technological aspects of theatre – set, staging, props, costume, make-up, lighting, digital media and sound that we learned about last term.
The task was to read through the play, create a unique OPC and build a model of the set design (maquette) to present to the class. It’s been wonderful to hear such a variety of visions for Sleuth and see the creative ideas supporting them. From 1930s traditional English to 1920s Shanghai and abstract concepts around arrogance and psychological games and puzzles, the girls have worked hard to put together well-rounded presentations of how they would like to produce this play.

“For this project, our task was to create a maquette for the play Sleuth. The task was to give us insight into the process of creating a stage concept and designing a set. This was a great task to give us the experience needed to understand the production side of drama.”
Natalie Mower

“I really enjoyed this project!  Making the maquette was a challenge and seemed quite difficult at times, but it turned out really well in the end, and was very fun all in all.”
Pippa King

“I did not enjoy making the maquette very much, I found it very hard to translate my thoughts, and what I have imagined it to be in my head, into a working maquette. The rest of the project was much more enjoyable, I particularly liked working on the costumes as it was very interesting to research 1920s Shanghai fashion (as I based the theme of my concept on it) and sketching out designs for each costume.”
Grace Liu

“For this project we had to make a maquette for a drama, it was really cool. Making the maquette was a challenge, this is why I liked it so much. It was quite hard to pull out my ideas and start the maquette, but eventually I got there. :)”
Emily Ebskamp

“I liked the ideas, coming up with ideas and the learning behind it.  However, making the maquette and getting my ideas to work together was frustrating and hard.”
Anna Longman
