Middle & Senior School Weekly Bulletin – 3 December

Middle & Senior School Weekly Bulletin – 3 December

Tēnā koutou katoa

We have had a very busy week with a range of fantastic events taking place. On Monday, the 7C and 7S presented an assembly to the Middle School on the theme of integrity which is one of our school values.
Frankie Kopp in 7S summed it up very well:
“Integrity, what does that word mean to you? To me it’s not just a word. It’s an action. Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Spencer Johnson once said, “Integrity is telling the truth, and honestly telling the truth to other people. ” The easy part of integrity is doing what’s popular, the hard bit is doing what’s right.

The Year 7 talents were on full display with a group hip hop dance (video further down) and beautiful musical performances. The girls are to be congratulated for the time and effort put into organising this assembly.

The Year 8’s had their St. John’s First Aid Training on Monday which went very well and is important knowledge to have in their kete.

The Year 7 and 8 Positive Fairies Committee (with helpers) have been extremely busy and industrious wrapping our Shoebox Christmas boxes. We would like to extend our thanks to Paper Plus, Whitcoulls and Queensgate for their incredibly generous donations of Christmas wrapping paper and ribbons. A special thanks must also go to Rachel Lavis who has been instrumental in the organisation of this initiative and sourced the wrapping paper from the three outlets. The next step will be to load up the school van and take the boxes to Epuni School.

The Year 7 and 8 students have had lots of fun today with their Activities Day organised by Mrs Rose Bertram and supported by staff running a range of workshops for the students.

Our only photo submitted for the Family Fashion Christmas Challenge came from Natalie Mower in Year 10 with her gorgeous pets, Aspen the dog and Target the cat. In my recent mailout to Year 7-10 parents and students, I outlined the details of our Middle School Family Quiz Night on Zoom and Kahoot. If you have not seen this mailout, please get in touch and we will send it to you. There is a google form response to fill in so we know how many families will be taking part in the quiz.

Next Monday, the students can look forward to the Middle School Science Fair and I have had a sneak peek at some of the displays which are very impressive with fascinating topic choices. This will be followed by our Christmas Service to celebrate the upcoming festive season. There will be photos in our final bulletin.

As our Middle and Senior School Prize giving is coming up on the 9th of December, we require students to be in pristine formal uniform with any missing buttons sewn on, shoes polished and blazers in good condition for this occasion.

New students Orientation Day

Last Friday, we have all of our new Year 7, 8 and 9 students come in for an Orientation Day. It was lovely to see our own Year 6 students from Primary getting to know some new girls as part of this. The morning began with fantastic subject-based workshops for Science and Art run by the staff and assisted by a group of our wonderful Year 9’s. The next two workshops were Music and Aerobics, with Drama in the afternoon, before a shared afternoon tea of pizza. The feedback from our new students was very positive and they are looking forward to starting in Middle School next year. I would like to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to Mrs Rose Bertram, our Year 7 and 8 Dean for her superb organisation of the day, the staff who ran the workshops and our students who helped and were fantastic buddies in the afternoon.

Spelling Bee Success

On Saturday 27 November the 2021 Aotearoa New Zealand Spelling Bee Final took place at City Gallery Te Ngakau, Civic Square. Our very own Jessica Park was one of 21 finalists.
She did an amazing job surviving 19 rounds and was in the last 3 to battle out the spelling contest. There were some funny moments as Jess was keen to request information on each word and one in particular moment made us all laugh, when she asked the compere to actually spell ‘Redoubtable’ and he nearly did! It alleviated some of the tension in the theatre as we fell into a fit of giggles!
The final 3 schools were all Wellington based and we should be proud of our Chilton Saint James Speller who was runner-up to the winner- it all boiled down to a vowel!
Well done Jessica – you are amazing and we hope that you might inspire another CSJ student to participate next year 2022.

Science – 7C

This term we’ve been learning about our plastic footprint and how we may reduce and reuse our own plastic footprint. Here are some musical instruments made by 7C.
