The last week of Term began with the Year 7-10 Science Fair exhibits which they have been working on very diligently this term. The variety of topics, detailed research and high quality of presentation was outstanding and something that all of the students involved should be justifiably proud of creating. I was particularly impressed that in every instance, students could speak very eloquently and engagingly about their Science Fair exhibit and what they had learnt in the process, including things that surprised or interested them.
Our Christmas Service on Monday included a range of uplifting and joyful carols with Jenele Saunders, Pippa King and Maria Williams reading the story of Christmas. We finished the service with the entertaining and delightful video titled, ‘Christmas According to Kids’. A big thank you to Ms Natalie Moreno, our School Chaplain for coordinating this celebration.
Due to the poor weather this week, the Year 7 students were not able to go on their planned sailing trip on Tuesday, but did have two spells of active fun in the afternoon thanks to Mrs Jude Tungatt.
On Tuesday evening, we ran our Middle School Council Christmas Quiz via Zoom on Kahoot. The quiz covered a range of topics and something for everyone in the family. Thank you to the families who joined in and provided such a great competition. Prizes were given out to students from the winning families to take home and share.

Millie and Pippa King (left) and their mum Catherine claimed the team name ‘Mostly Harmless’ and proved to be formidable by coming 1st, Natalie Mower (right) and her family came 2nd and the Merry Quizmas team of Catja Whitehead and her dad Phil were placed third. Ka rawe to everyone who took part! Natalie Mower was also our winner for the Christmas Fashion competition with her lovely pets who got some well-deserved treats along with Natalie.
We had a late entry for our Christmas Fashion Competition with our own Christmas elf – I wonder who it could be?
Members of the Positive Fairies Committee were able to take Chilton’s Christmas Shoeboxes to Epuni School on Wednesday. This wonderful initiative was contributed to by students, parents and staff. We hope it will bring joy to the children who receive their Christmas boxes.
On Wednesday, the Year 10 Art students went to the City Gallery to see ‘Hilma af Klint: the Secret Paintings exhibition. The recent rediscovery of her paintings has changed the course of art history so the students were very fortunate to be able to see these.
I wish all of our Middle and Senior School students a wonderful holiday break where they can enjoy time with family and friends. They deserve a well-earned break away from school work and screens and we look forward to seeing everyone in Term 1 2022. It has been an absolute pleasure working with them this year – they are remarkable rangatahi.
Meri Kirihimete to our Middle School families and we hope you have a rejuvenating and happy holiday season.
Ngā mihi nui

During the past few weeks in English, the year 8s have been hard at work brainstorming, creating and publishing their very own magazines! We were challenged with the task of creating a school magazine in groups.
Miss Wackrow and Ms. Khalique started off by showing us some different types of magazines. We looked at Hunting and Fishing magazines, Women’s Weekly, New York Times and many more! After that, we got into our groups and found a cool and catchy title. Next, we decided the different roles each person would play. Like, the editor, who overlooks the project. Then we let teamwork make our dreams work!
Our magazines varied in styles and topics. For example, some groups swayed towards an inspirational and soothing type of magazine, while others made a more comedic and relaxed, or conversational newspaper.
I really enjoyed this project and I think I learnt many valuable skills throughout these past few weeks. Such as, how to work well in groups and incorporate other people’s ideas and how to write a letter to an editor, if I ever wanted to complain about an important issue. My favourite part about this magazine project was being able to create the quiz because it was fun and I was able to put my own personal spin on it. Also, I loved creating the feature article because I learnt a lot of new things about a topic that I am passionate about while writing it.
For me personally, being able to create and play around with many different skills in order to create this magazine was a real bonus. Magazines make talking, reading or writing about different issues easier. It is just so rewarding pouring your heart out into an extract. Whether you’re writing about something that happened recently or trying to inspire others to step out of their comfort zones and do something interesting! I really enjoyed being able to use digital platforms to create cool pages, incorporate art styles, jokes, a fun comment or two and interesting information. Overall, this whole experience was one to remember!
Here are some extracts of our creations! Come to S3 and S4 to check them out in person.
On Wednesday 8 December, the Year 10 Art class went on a field trip to City Gallery Wellington to see the exhibition of Hilma af Klint.
In an era offering limited creative freedoms for women, af Klint, created an entirely new artistic language—possibly even abstraction itself—years before Vassily Kandinsky and other male abstraction artists.
Af Klint recognised that the world was not ready for her work and anticipated a future more open to its message. She left instructions that her work be kept secret until at least twenty years after her death. Over the last few years, af Klint has become one of the world’s most discussed artists.
There have been exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Serpentine Gallery, London; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Musée d’Orsay, Paris; and Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
The students enjoyed looking at and drawing the paintings in the large open spaces, and had an educational session from one of the specialists at the gallery before entering the exhibition.
Year 7 worked on the distances of the planets in our solar system. 1 Astronomical Unit is the distance between the Sun and the Earth. If 1 AU was 1 meter, then the first 4 rocky planets would be all bunched up and Neptune would be about 30 metres away from the Sun!
Check out these pictures from our recent ‘egg drop’ challenge.
