Middle & Senior School Weekly Bulletin – 1 October

Kia ora koutou 

We have arrived at the end of another Term with great heart and Chilton spirit despite the challenges our school, students and families have faced. The Year 13’s ran a fantastic event for the school on Thursday with the Chilton Carnival and raised $2,117.20 for their legacy project which will benefit Chilton students for years to come. We hope their last week in classes and attending their special events has been joyful and that they know how much we appreciate and care for them. They have been an outstanding group of young people who embody the very best of our Chilton values and we wish them every success and happiness in the next part of their journey.

Reports for the Year 10-13 students will be sent home electronically and will include helpful feedback they can use to prepare for the examinations ahead. If you have not received a report by Wednesday afternoon, please email deverett@chilton.school.nz. Examination tutorials for Year 11-13 students will be run by class teachers to help them with their preparation and they will communicate times and dates to the students. 

I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank the staff who have worked so incredibly hard this Term – they are dedicated to our students and want the very best for them. It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege working closely with staff, students and parents over the course of this Term as Acting Principal. The encouragement and support has been much appreciated. We look forward to welcoming Kate Pollard to Chilton in Term 4 and I am sure that she will love getting to know our Chilton families.

We hope our rangatahi have some time to rest and to have fun over the next two weeks. There is a great deal to look forward to in Term 4!

Art – Gwen Isaac visit

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker and director Gwen Isaac visited the senior Digital Media and Design class in the last week of term 3. The students showcased their current film and animation projects for Gwen to critique and suggest new ideas.

Gwen studied film at Auckland University of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Communications in Television Documentary. She has worked in Los Angeles and London, and recently returned to New Zealand to continue making documentaries rather than direct reality television. Her most recent project, Siouxsie and the Virus, covers the events of the first lockdown in New Zealand during 2020. Because Gwen specialises in issues-driven, human-centred story-telling in her documentaries, she reminded most students to bring their attention back to their characters in their projects.

 Gwen directed and produced factual content for leading broadcasters in the UK and USA, before making her first feature-length documentary based in New Zealand, ‘Where There is Life’ in 2017. The film followed the journey of a family dealing with motor neuron disease and mortality. The story also questioned the End of Life bill that was part of the recent referendum.

Gwen Isaac is now a lecturer and the School of Music and Creative Media Production at Massey University in Wellington.

She was making a documentary on a fluent Te Reo speaking female cage fighter living in Japan when covid-19 abruptly ended filming. Gwen then began making ‘Siouxsie & the Virus’, which covers Dr Siouxsie Wiles, a microbiologist from Auckland, who personally advised political leaders in the lead up to New Zealand’s lockdown.

Gwen counselled the students in the Digital Media and Design class with their own current projects as they prepare for their final exams. She gave some critical and insightful feedback, useful tips to guide them and important strategies for filming, editing and writing.

In AS Psychology we have been using our minds and bodies to learn the different key assumptions of the approaches to psychology that we have been learning about. By adding movement it makes it easier to remember and recall this information in our upcoming final examinations! Have a watch and see what you can learn as well! – Ms Wallace

Awards season will shortly be upon us in Term 4 and to ensure we consider and include all our wonderful artistes at Chilton, we would ask students and parents to fill out the following form with any Extra Curricular activities or performances.  If you are involved in music, dance, drama or art outside of school, we would like to know!  We would be grateful if you could fill out this form in the link below and return it by 16 October 2021.

CMS and Senior Music students end of term news

Recently our CMS (Chilton Music School) students and other Senior Music students presented an outstanding recital of music for their end of year AS and AL Music Cambridge performance assessments.

The recital was a wonderful showcase for the outstanding progress and high achievement of all these students. From dynamic performances of Musical Theatre songs to beautiful Violin, Cello and Piano advanced repertoire, our students were truly amazing!

Congratulations to Violinists Shanita Sungsuwan, Leo Malcolm; Cellists Nathan Parker and Anisa Sungsuwan,  Pianist and violinist Cordelia Waldron, and Singing students Rowan Goldsack, Niamh Bolger, Emily Ogden, Kate McGimpsey and Amelia Mansfield.

Despite the interruptions of the Covid year, our students have participated and excelled in our school orchestras and choirs,   Wellington Youth orchestra,  Chamber Music groups, Musical productions in the community and  at school, as well as leadership roles in House Music. Many are working towards Diploma examinations later in the year also. Well done to all!  We are very proud of you.
