Kia ora koutou katoa
This week I have been keeping up with the adventures of the Year 9 students on camp at Kaiteriteri. They have had a fantastic time hiking, paddling, dancing and having great fun, generally. I’m sure they will all look forward to seeing their families at the ferry terminal when they arrive back, and sharing what they have accomplished over the week. Camps are a very special feature of school life and something that creates long lasting good memories for our students. It is not too long now until the Year 8 and 10 students can look forward to their own adventures.
8C and 8S put together a wonderful assembly with plenty of variety for the benefit of the Middle School on Monday. There were a number of excellent performances with a rap trio, a skillful and beautiful piece on the piano by Danielle Wu, Amelia Maguire showing her outstanding ability with breathtaking ballet and choreographed dancing dinosaurs with Maddi Shaw and Sophia Hickey. We were truly privileged to have the Year 8’s share their talents with us and hopefully it inspires other Middle School students to do the same. The Year 7’s are already planning their assembly presentation before the end of the term and it will be very creative, I am sure.
It was an absolute pleasure and joy to watch the Primary students perform in the ‘Snow Queen’ on Wednesday afternoon. They were all so well-prepared and performed with real dedication to their roles. The production told the story of friendship that endures through difficult times and the power of love which is always an important theme to promote and even more powerful coming from our younger students. The Year 10 students were an appreciative audience and the Year 10 Drama students also helped in backstage roles to make things run smoothly.
“And they both sat there, grown up, yet children at heart; and it was summer, – warm, beautiful summer.”
― Hans Christian Andersen, The Snow Queen
Jenele Saunders, the Arts representative, and her team are busy organising ‘Chilton’s Got Talent’ for Wednesday 17th of November and we can’t wait! This event was postponed due to the Lockdown but the Middle School Council were determined to make it happen.
Weather permitting, we have our Year 1-10 Active Fun Event with Youth Town coming into school next Friday, the 19th of November, during Spell 3 and 4. Students will be in their Houses and rotate around a number of activities. This event will be action-packed and provide a great opportunity for students to score some serious House Points!
Kia pai tō rā whakatā – have a great weekend!

Our Year 9 students have had the absolute pleasure of spending the week down in Kaiteriteri for their camp. They were split into two teams called Waiporoporo and Karaka and had a great time exploring, bonding and taking part in some fantastic activities. We have a collection of photos below, starting from the ferry trip, before getting down at the beach, to chants for their Survivor Kaiteriteri competition on Tuesday. They also took on the challenge of a sand sculpture competition, I wonder who won? ?
On Wednesday, there was a waka trip, kayaking and paddle boarding.
As we send this bulletin, the Year 9 students are travelling home from their camp in Kaiteriteri. They have had a fantastic week which included hiking, a waka trip, sea- kayaking, paddle boarding, a Survivor Kaiteriteri competition and a great concert finale. The weather was warm and sunny most of the time, but the campers also experienced a very wet hike in the Abel Tasman National Park. Throughout the week, everyone showed courage, resilience and teamwork to make the most of the opportunity.
Finally after a lot of delays and some complications, Year 8 got to host Middle School assembly on Monday. It went pretty well and even though we had some technical issues we made it work, and personally I think it was a success. I think the Middle School especially enjoyed the performances showcasing our talent in Year 8. The dinosaurs, Mad-zilla (Maddi Shaw) and Sophia-saurus (Sophia Hickey) did a fantastic job, entertained everyone and definitely did not disappoint with the dance moves. All the work behind the scenes definitely did not go unnoticed, so thank you to everyone that helped make our Year 8 assembly work out and be a success!

Today Josie Hunt came from Saint John to teach us all about emergencies and what to do in the case of one. We learned how to check if someone was having a stroke and what the step-by-step process would be if someone was unconscious. We then learned what to do in the case of a burn or cut and how to do CPR. This was a really fun but informative course and we all walked away confidently knowing what to do in an emergency.- Pragnya Mooji

They have asked New Zealanders to create/write a Christmas cards to help combat loneliness.
They partner with Age Concern to distribute these cards. Age Concern do critical work throughout the country, including one on one interaction, education and prevention, social connections and health promotion.

The year 7 Materials students have taken on the role of fashion designers to create a runway item showcasing a ‘party’ outfit. The designers had to sketch ideas for suitable party outfits for a teenager then work through to a final design. These designs came alive on mannequins. It’s difficult to appreciate the details of these designs from the photos but there was some inspirational work coming from these budding fashion designers. Catja Whitehead was the supreme winner of the runway with her gorgeous jumpsuit design! Well done to Catja and all the students.
Accessories were well planned to complement a stylish and sophisticated jumpsuit.
Year 8 Music classes have been rehearsing their band and ensemble work. We are looking forward to hearing their final performances.
Each week our Middle School students have been sharing their musical journey by performing for their class. This week Catja Whitehead played her trumpet, explaining how the sound is produced and some of the challenges a beginner faces learning the instrument. Trumpet lessons will again be offered at Chilton in 2022 through our instrumental programme.
Peer Gynt, trolls, foot stamps and claps? What has Middle School music been up to this week? Our Year 7 students have been working with Greig’s “Hall of the Mountain King” exploring rhythm and metre through body percussion. They have had great fun creating and performing their own four bar body percussion compositions.
The Wellington International Student Excellence Awards have invited Danielle to perform at their event coming up soon. This is a well-deserved invitation as Danielle is the only female Asian student from Wellington in the Scholars Level 3 of the New Zealand School of Dance. She has also had her artwork selected by Toitoi media publisher as an illustrator for Toitoi Issue 25 and 26. Chilton will receive two copies of her illustrations in this publication which we look forward to seeing.
Congratulations on these outstanding achievements, Danielle!
