Middle & Senior School Weekly Bulletin – 19 November

Kia ora koutou katoa

Our Year 9 campers came back safe and sound after a slightly extended wait in a typically windy Wellington Harbour last Friday night. They enjoyed a range of water and land-based activities, but most importantly each other’s company.

On Wednesday during Form Time, we had ‘Chilton’s Got Talent’ which was organised by Jenele Saunders, our Middle School Council Arts Representative. She was very well-supported by the Middle School Council team and other Year 10’s. Jenele can be extremely proud of what she put together for the entertainment and enjoyment of the Middle School and the selection of Primary students who were also able to attend. I would like to sincerely thank the Middle School Council, Pippa King, Sienna Rusling, Natalie Mower, Leo Malcolm, Cordelia Waldron, Sophia Hickey, Maddi Shaw, Izzy Lewis, Willa Velvin, Una Lynskey, Catja Whitehead, Misia Hosie, Anji Chu and Kaydi Zhang for sharing their outstanding talents with their peers and to hopefully inspire other students to also put themselves forward for opportunities that arise each year to perform for an appreciative audience. There are some videos and photos below of the stars of the show.

Our Positive Fairies Committee has been very busy organising the logistics of the Christmas Shoebox Initiative with the help of Rachel Lavis who alerted the girls to this opportunity and has been guiding them through the process along with Mrs Rose Bertram, the Year 7 and 8 Dean. Form classes have been given their boxes, each one is accompanied by a description of their young recipient’s gender and interests. The task for form classes and form captains is to fill their boxes with thoughtful gifts to be opened by their young recipient(s) at Christmas time. The Positive Fairies Committee would like the boxes to be filled by Monday 29November. The boxes will then be wrapped up ready for Christmas and taken to Epuni School on Monday the 6th of December to be given out to the children. The work done by the Positive Fairies Committee and their dedication to helping others throughout the year has been truly inspiring and wonderful to witness.

Finally, a big thank you to the Sports Department for organising our Active Fun Event today. A great range of activities were on offer for Years 1-10 students to participate in: Tennis, Badminton, Football, Cricket, Youth Town, Pukutakaro, Yoga and Jump Jam. This gave students an opportunity to try out a number of sports and perhaps find a new passion. Keeping students active is also a good way to preserve their physical and emotional wellbeing which was an important part of this event.

Family Christmas Challenge #1

There’s nothing better than some good old friendly competition to kick off the holiday season! The Middle School Council is challenging you and your family to a Christmas Costume Competition. It’s time to dust off those “ugly” Christmas sweaters, reindeer antlers, and Santa costumes because for the best dressed family, prizes will be coming your way! To enter please send your Christmas Family Fashion photos to : jhayton@chilton.school.nz and kwang2@chilton.school.nz by Friday 3rd of December. Winners will be announced on Monday the 6th of December in our Year 7 assembly.

We are looking forward to seeing how creative our Chilton Middle School families can get with this. Good luck and be sure to have fun with it!

Music – Year 8

Our Year 8 musicians have been busy rehearsing their band and ensemble performances this week. With a focus on working together as a group and listening to each other, the year 8s discovered that it is not easy to sing and play together at the same time! What is even more impressive is that many of these students have challenged themselves to play a new instrument for their upcoming performance. It is great to see a growth mindset in action. We caught one group’s rehearsal of Bob Marley’s classic “Three little birds”.

Music – Year 9

In Year 9 Music, students have been preparing for their solo performance assessments. Alice Scaglione performed Telemann’s, “Adagio & Allegro” from Fantasia no 2 in A minor. A hardworking and musical student, Alice is currently preparing for her upcoming Trinity Grade 6 flute exam. Alice learns through Chilton’s instrumental programme with her talented teacher Andrea Curzon-Hobson.

If your daughter would like to learn flute next year at Chilton, our Instrumental and Voice enrolments will open before the end of the school year on Chiton Central.

Lion Dancing

Year 8 and 9 Chinese students had an amazing Chinese Lion Dance workshop this Tuesday and Wednesday. Lion Dance is a common performance in China which may be seen at many festivals and happy occasions, such as the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, business openings and weddings. Performers need to work in pairs and imitate lions’ behaviours. Thank you to Confucius Institute of Victoria University for offering such a wonderful cultural experience opportunity to our students. It was such a privilege to have Winsome Lam who is full of kindness, humour and passion, come to our school and run the workshop. Check out the video to see how much fun we had ?

Student Success – Phoebe Bridger Atkins

Congratulations to Phoebe Bridger Atkins for completing the Double Black Tip grading. She received her junior black belt 2 years ago and has been steadily working her way through the adult belts since.

At 12 she is now the youngest person at the club to reach Double Black Tip, which is one belt below Adult Black Belt.

The youngest adult black belt at the club to date has been 14, Phoebe’s goal is to get hers while she is still 13. She has worked very hard and we are extremely proud of her. Go Phoebe!
