Music Staff Profile – Meet Kristina Zelinska

Kristina Zelinska – New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
Kristina was born in Ukraine into a family of professional musicians. Being surrounded by a wonderful world of music from a very early age determined Kristina’s greatest passion which she carried on through all her life. She started studying violin at the age of six at Kiev Music School which gives a unique opportunity for kids to study music extensively alongside regular curriculum at the same institution. After 11 years Kristina graduated at the age of 17 with distinction and was one of the most prominent representatives of the school. She was successfully accepted into highly competitive Tchaikovsky Conservatory which was also a patron of Kiev School of Music.

While studying at the Conservatory, Kristina was appointed as principal first violin at the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine and regularly performed with Kiev Chamber Orchestra touring internationally throughout Europe and Asia. Her family moved to New Zealand in 1995 and Kristina and her husband decided to join them in 1999. In Christchurch, Kristina continued her studies at the University of Canterbury with Jan Tawroszewicz as well as giving numerous solo and chamber music recitals. In 2001 she was appointed as principal first violin of Christchurch Symphony and in 2005 moved to Wellington to join the first violin section of the NZSO. In 2013 Kristina was awarded June Violet Common Scholarship and completed Winter Music Residency in January-March 2013 in Banff Centre, Canada working with highly inspiring and talented members of New Orford string quartet Jonathan Crow and Andrew Wan as well as collaborating with other artists from all around the world.

As well as playing in NZSO Kristina enjoys taking part in various chamber music projects, is a member of contemporary music ensemble Stroma and recently discovered a new passion performing regularly with Nuevo tango group.
