Penguin

This week we welcome Maria Walker and her whānau into the Penguin group. Nau mai, haere mai Maria!

The Penguins have been loving the beautiful weather we have had this week because it means we can play with water every day! Water play has so many wonderful benefits for children including developing hand-eye coordination, problem solving skills and sharing. The Penguins have also planted some sunflower seeds and a tomato plant so we have been learning about how the plants need water to grow and the responsibility of making sure the plants have enough water and sun.

Maui

This week the Maui children have been learning about the letter Ll. A variety of activities were made available for tamariki to explore and practice this week’s letter, developing their alphabet and phonics knowledge, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skills.

The Maui’s like playing hide and seek outside. Building on that interest, we have incorporated  a “find the hiding Ll’s” activity.

The Maui’s also did a lamp craft and practiced the Ll sound “l,l,l” accompanied with the action of licking a lollipop.

Sand play is a Maui favourite. Inside, the sand activity allows the Maui’s to practice forming the letter of the week, write their names, and draw. They especially like it when the letter of the week can be found in their names!

Kea

As part of our Preschool Literacy Programme the children are offered the experience of learning to read in small groups. For young children learning to read is a process that involves their ability to use memory, knowledge of letter sounds to decipher words as well as make meaning/predict text through pictures. Each child gets to take a reader home weekly to discuss what they learnt at Preschool with their parents. Taking the reader home and retelling the story enables children to develop recall, develop comprehension and reinforce the learning happening at Preschool. Our Keas love this shared learning experience; it is an absolute joy to see the children’s enthusiasm, excitement, focus and level of engagement at reading time!

Kotare

In the Kotare group, we continue to develop skills and extend children at their own level of development and interest. We work on understanding that letters make words, pointing to each word as they say it as they move along the line. We especially seek to develop their comprehension of the story and interpretation of picture clues.

Snow Queen audience

On Wednesday this week, our girls who are currently transitioning to Chilton Primary School were invited to watch the Primary students perform their production for this year: The Snow Queen.

The girls sat beautifully to watch the show and were enthralled! Here are some of their comments:

Hasri: “I like the Snow Queen dress and the Robbers. I saw my sister there!”

Aurora: “I liked when they were all in a group at the end, and I liked all of the outfits.”

Flora: “I was very happy and I see all my friends.”

Kiara: “I loved Aimee’s dance, it was beautiful. The Snow Queen was SO good and I loved it!!”

The Snow Queen is proudly sponsored by Abode Air Conditioning Limited.
